Japanese Shotokan Karate Association of Rochester

The JSKA Rochester LLC is committed to teaching traditional Shotokan Karate.  Training at the JSKA is directly influenced by teachings of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and the JSKA Rochester instructors have had direct training by JKA instructors.  Classes consist of several areas of training: Kihon (basics), Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring).  We also teach self defense and control techniques.

Training at the JSKA is vigorous, athletic and technical.  All students are encouraged to develop their potential, both physically and mentally.  Discipline, honor and integrity apply not only on the dojo training floor but in all aspects of everyday life.  It is also a very family friendly environment.  We have fathers and sons, Mothers and daughters training in the same class as well as husband and wives.

Training is applicable for all age groups, with an emphasis on the elements of self-defense.  Participation in sport tournaments is limited.  Although tournaments are a test of one’s abilities against unknown opponents, the rules of engagement are prescribed. The challenges of real life are not prescribed - one must prepare oneself for these challenges through strength of character and perseverance. We typically participate in about 2-3 tournaments per year.  We also have a weekend summer camp each year as well as 5-6 specific topic oriented seminars throughout the year.  Topics range from a specific Kata, Bunkai, Kumite Strategy, Sweeping, Kicking, Defensive Tactics etc.

“The biggest competitor you will face is yourself.  You have to get up every morning, you have to train and you have to grow. To practice to beat another is relatively easier.”  (reference: Essays on Karate-do by James V. Morrone, Jr.).
